NEW DELHI: India's prodigious chess talent, 17-year-old D Gukesh, etched his name in history by clinching the FIDE Candidates chess tournament 2024 crown in Toronto, thus becoming the youngest-ever challenger for the world title.

Following his victory, Gukesh expressed his ambition to triumph in the World Championship Final, stating, "My next goal is to make it big at the World Championship."

Reflecting on his journey, Gukesh shared the mental challenges he encountered during the tournament, emphasizing his determination to excel. "I am just planning to do my absolute best and try to do the right things," he asserted, highlighting his commitment to preparation and performance.

In Round 14, Gukesh strategically secured a draw against rival contender Hikaru Nakamura, sealing his victory and paving the path for his upcoming challenge against reigning champion Ding Liren. "I haven't really thought about the preparations yet; I did not get much time to. I will soon start thinking about the match," he remarked, eagerly anticipating the opportunity to compete for the crown.

Acknowledging the burgeoning popularity of chess in India, Gukesh expressed optimism about the sport's future in the country. "Chess in India is growing, and it's a great time for chess in the country," he observed, hopeful that his achievement would inspire more individuals to embrace the game.

Gukesh's triumph follows in the footsteps of Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand, who secured victory in the Candidates Tournament in 2014.
