Limba Ram: Archery

Limba Ram is a remarkable Indian archer having added medals to the Indian tally at various international events. Born on 30th January, 1972 in Saradeet village of Rajasthan, he grew up in a poor family belonging to the Ahari Tribe. At a very young age he had started to hunt birds like sparrows, partridges as well as other animals in the jungle with his indigenous bamboo bow and arrow. In 1987, his uncle brought the news that the government is conducting trials for archers in the nearby village, this is where a 15 year old Limba Ram was spotted by the selectors of Sports Authority of India. Thereafter, he was sent to the training camp in Delhi under the coaching of RS Sodhi. During his career he represented India at three Olympic games.

Highlights of his career

  • In 1987, he became a champion at the National Junior Level Archery Tournament. A year later, he became the overall champion at the National Senior Level Tournament and got the opportunity to represent India at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
  • In the year 1989, he won a silver medal at the Asian Cup in the men's individual event and a gold in the men’s team event. In the same year, he reached the quarter finals of the World Archery Championships.
  • In 1992, he won a gold medal at the Asian Archery Championships in men’s individual 30 meters event, with a score of 358/360, equalling the world record of Takayoshi Matsushita. He narrowly missed the bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics after the score was tied and his opponent who shot a higher number of 10s was declared the winner.
  • In 1995, he won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Archery Championships in the men's individual event and a gold in the men’s team event.
  • He emerged as the National Champion in 1996 with the Asian Record. He also participated in the Atlanta Summer Olympics in the same year.

The Government of India conferred him with the Arjuna Award in 1991 and Padma Shri in 2012. In 1996, he suffered from a shoulder injury while playing football and was unable to continue with archery.

On January 10, 2009 Archery Association of India appointed Limba Ram as the Chief Coach for 2009 World Cup and later for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Under his coaching the Indian archers won 3 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
In recent years, he has been battling with a neurodegenerative condition and he is said to be recovering well.
