Jeev Milkha Singh: Golf

Born on 15th December, 1971, Jeev Milkha Singh is an Indian professional golfer. He is the son of Indian Athlete Milkha Singh and the former captain of Indian women’s volleyball team Nirmal Saini. He started his career as a professional golfer in the year 1993. His professional wins include four European Tour wins, six Asian Tour wins and four Japan Tour wins, making him the most successful golfer to come from India. He is the third Indian golfer to be conferred the Arjuna Award (1999). In 2007, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour.

International Career: Highlights

  • His first win was at the 1993 Southern Oklahoma State Open. Thereafter, he mainly played in Asia and was a regular winner through the mid-90s.
  • In 1998, he became the first Indian player to join the European Tour.
  • He won the Volvo China Open in 2006, becoming the second Indian player to win on the European Tour. He also won the season ending Volvo Masters, elevating his final position on the Order of Merit to 16th. He won the Asian Tour in the same year. He is the first Indian to reach the Top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking.
  • In 2007, he became the first Indian Golfer to participate in the Masters Tournament. He has played three Masters Tournament. At the 2009 Masters Tournament he was paired with Tiger Woods for the first two rounds.
  • In 2008, at the PGA Championship, he achieved the highest ranking for an Indian at any major event. He won the Barclays Singapore Open and his second Order of Merit title on the Asian Tour. In the same year he also won the Bank Austria Golf Open. He finished the European Tour ranked 12th on the Order of Merit.
  • In 2009, he finished 4th at the WGC-CA Championship.
  • In 2012, he won the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open in a sudden-death playoff, which secured him a spot at the Open Championship. This victory was also his fourth career win on the European Tour, making him the most successful Indian Golfer on the European Tour.

His career-high world ranking of 28 is till date the highest ranking achieved by an Indian golfer. He has also been honoured with the Asia Pacific Lifetime Achievement Award.
